Workers were given a specific question and asked to rank their opinions on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most important. Keep in mind that different job situations were used in this survey. “What Do People Want From their Jobs?” CategoriesWorkers Say:Employers Think:Interesting work56Job security79Tactful discipline14Full appreciation of work done103High wages610Good working conditions27Help on personal problems82Personal loyalty from manager35Feeling of “being in on things”91Promotion in the company48 I found this to be quite interesting and I think it tells us a lot about where some work related problems surface from. Where would your rankings be? You and Your Contract For many of us, our employment at MEA, MESSA or MEA-Financial Services is the first experience we have with unions and labor relations. Although we belong to a union, and our work is related to a union, we may not understand how our bargained contract touches each of us personally in our careers. So to help explain things, your USO Communications Committee is taking a close look at some of the provisions in our contracts, hopefully to explain them more clearly. Our goal is for every USO member to see how much our jobs are determined by the collective bargaining between USO and the employers, and to be well-informed for their job security and involvement. If these short summaries bring up further questions, please feel free to contact your individual unit officers or the USO officers. MESSA PSA This is a reminder for all MESSA PSA members that you have until 7/1 to use all unused vacation time over three weeks. Any time up to three weeks is paid-off in the first check in July. This section reads as follows: Article 10-Authorized Absences, Section I paragraph #2: "Up to three (3) weeks of unused vacation will be reimbursed to the bargaining unit member on June 30 each year. Up to six (6) weeks of unused vacation will be reimbursed to the bargaining at retirement or termination provided a 30-day termination notice was given and all equipment and credit cards have been properly returned." If you have questions or concerns regarding this clause please contact your Bargaining Chairperson. ASO Do you have more vacation time saved up than you think you can use this year? Did you know that the contract allows you to trade vacation time for pay? Read the excerpt below, and see if it is something you want to take advantage of. Article 17.18 from the contract covering the Associate Staff Employees 1996-2004: Pay for Vacation Leave Each bargaining unit member may elect to be paid for vacation days in lieu of taking said days as vacation as follows… At any time during the 2000-01 through 2003-04 contract years, each bargaining unit member may elect to be paid for up to (3) day per year. MESSA Health Benefits in our contracts Did you know… Bargaining unit members and their dependents covered under a MESSA medical health plan can take advantage of programs available from the Health Care Resources Department? MESSA offers two programs to help members manage their asthma and diabetes. The intent is to partner with members to achieve successful long-term control of their symptoms using these educational programs. Participants in the asthma education program show a substantial decrease in severity of symptoms, emergency room and hospital care, and time lost from work or school. MESSA also provides members with asthma quarterly newsletter called Asthma Action. Health Care Resources has a certified diabetic educator on staff that tailors program materials to member of all ages and with any type of diabetes mellitus (Type I, Type II, gestational, etc.). Diabetic member education is a practical and proven approach to effectively manage diabetes. If you or your covered dependents have asthma or diabetes and want to participate in an education program designed to assist you in maintaining better control, please contact Health Care Resources at 800-292-4910 ext., 7874. Health Care Resources also has a packet specifically targeting men and their health needs. If you are interested in receiving this information call 800-292-4910 ext. 7328 or at headquarters, contact Linda Shankland at ext. 4054.
